Stress is different for all individuals, so there is no one single solution to manage it. You may have to do through numerous attempts until you find what is best for you. Finding healthy, positive ways on how to deal with stress will complete your overall well-being.

1. Nothing and no one can “make” you feel anything. It is a choice, your choice, on how you feel and the way you handle a situation. It is impossible for you to control others’ actions, but you can be in charge of your reactions.

Look at the situation and ask yourself “is this something I can change?” If so, start looking for positive ways to change the situation.

If the situation cannot be changed, such as an illness, for example, accept it for what it is. Accepting does not mean giving up. By accepting a situation and finding ways you can deal with what cannot be changed, stress can be drastically diminished.

2. Relax! Due to the bustle of everyday life, sometimes we stop thinking about ourselves. Relaxation revitalizes our body, mind, and spirit, helping us deal with stressful situations when they arise.

Try to find something that you enjoy and do it every day. Many people claim they don’t have time to relax, but relaxation does not have to be prolonged. Relaxation can include 5-10 minute breaks of breathing exercises or watching your favourite show for half an hour. Relaxation can also include socializing with your relatives and friends.

3. Replace attitude with gratitude. Our attitude greatly affects the ways on how we deal with situations. Negative attitudes influence our physical, spiritual, and mental health.

When in a particularly stressful situation, try replacing attitude with gratitude. When you are running late for a meeting because you are stuck in traffic, change your attitude. Instead of being upset about the traffic, look around and think of all the things you can be thankful for. Sometimes you can find gratitude in the smallest things. You can be thankful for life, health, family etc.

4. Evaluate your stressful situation. Ask yourself “how important is this?”, “will it influence your future?”

Stress does not have to be a part of life. When speaking about successful ways on how to deal with stress, it is all about learning how and when to take control. It’s important to keep in mind that you control how stress affects you. You can manage the stress or let stress control you.
