By mental health, we mean our state of mind – it is all about how we think, feel and conduct.

What is mental health

It includes our ability to enjoy life, to cope with daily situations, to handle stress, to relate to others. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood to adulthood. It can affect everybody, whether we are male or female, rich or poor.

When you have “good” mental health, you usually feel able to handle various everyday situations. When you have a mental illness, your thinking, behavior or mood could be affected.

There are a lot of factors that contribute to mental health problems, such as:

- Biological factors, including genetics or hormones, that could be responsible for the change of our mental health;
- Life experiences, including abuse, neglect or trauma that have occurred in our childhood and could have impact upon our mental health;
- Recent life events, including stress from work or study, or a traumatic event as the loss of a loved one;
- Misuse of drugs, including alcohol, have different effects on our brain, the results being unpredictable.

What are the early signs of a mental health disorder?
• losing interest in daily activities;
• feeling worried, scared, frustrated for no reason;
• constantly being in a bad mood, nervous, excited, forgetful;
• having trouble sleeping, or sleeping way more than usual;
• crying for no apparent reason;
• lacking motivation;
• feeling helpless or hopeless;
• having trouble concentrating;
• changing eating habits;
• having trouble in handling the daily school or work tasks;
• having trouble in taking part in everyday activities;
• yelling or fighting with family or friends etc.

If you’re experiencing any of these signs, it does not necessarily mean that you have a mental illness. In this context, you could address to someone you trust. If have been experiencing many of the symptoms from above over a long period of time, then it might be a good idea to call for help and set up an appointment with your doctor.
